When 5 years of age, Adam Henry Exline was brought by his parents from
Loudoun County, Va. to Bedford Co. , Pa. , with the German migration of
those years. The Exline families, Adam and all his sons settled in Friends
Cove, a little mountain valley settlement in Colerain township, Bedford County,
Pennsylvania. Elizabeth Waltman was the daughter of George and Margaret Waltman
who had migrated from Loudoun Co. Va. , to Bedford Co. , George and Margaret
appear in the 1790 census for Bedford- County with no children, at that date.
They were the only Waltman family in Bedford County for many years
George was the son of Emanuel and Margarite Waltman who came to Loudoun
Co., Va. in the German migration of 1732. Both are buried in New Jerusalem
church cemetery. In 1837 Adam Exline with his wife and their eldest
daughter Margaret and her husband George Speaker and the other
smaller children migrated to Sandyville, Ohio when the lure for free
land in Ohio became prevalent. A letter from Emanuel Speaker son of
George Speaker written in 1906 says of this trip "Adam Exline was my grandfather.
He and his entire family including his son-in-law George Speaker, left Friends Cove
Penn. about June 1837. They moved to what was then called Lower Sandusky, Ohio.
They remained there but a few weeks and had started to return to Friends Cove,
when they had gone as far as Flooms Tavern about half way between Canton
and Massillon, they were met by grandfathers brother John who lived near
Sandyville, Ohio, who urged them to go home with him and rest for a few days.
They went down with him. For family reasons, father and mother decided to wait
until Spring. The result was the whole family remained in and near Sandyville
for ten years. In the fall of 1847, nearly the entire family moved to Western
Ohio. My father and mother settled in Mercer county, Grandfather settled in the
southern part of Van Wert County where he and grandmother died," Elizabeth
Waltman Exline died in Van Wert County, Ohio about 1865. The exact date is unknown.
Late in life Adam married Mary who shared in his estate in 1873.
Names of the children of Adam with location are given in the probate of the estate,
records of which are on file in Van Wert County, Ohio. Adam Exline was a Farmer.
Relatives who remember him say he was a fine old gentleman respected by all
who knew him, The family worshipped at Greenbrier church near Van Wert, Ohio.
In the 1850 census, Adam and Elizabeth with daughter Elizabeth aged 18
were living in Liberty township. The farm of. Adam Exline was just one
half mile from that of his cousin Valentine Exline. There has been much
confusion among descendants in regard to Adam Exline above and his first
cousin Adam Exline who removed to Greene Co. Indiana. The latter was a
son of Bernard and six years younger.
